Biophillia Meaning

Biophilia is a new term that has gained popularity in the world of Interior Design. But what does it mean in simple terms? Biophilia means forming a connection with nature and living organisms, which positively affect health and well-being.

We spend an average of 90% of our lifetime indoors, approximately twenty-two hours a day. It's no wonder we face so many mental health and wellbeing issues in society today, especially after years of COVID-19 restrictions that forced us to spend extended periods in our homes or living quarters.

With changes in urbanization over the last few decades and the rising cost of land, more people are living on smaller sites or in high-rise apartments, and outdoor green spaces have either shrunk or disappeared.

Biophilic design principles are not new; they have been around for a long time. However, they are becoming increasingly important in helping us connect with nature and "Whenua" (the land). "Wai Ora," a core concept in Māori culture, connects people and the environment. When done well, it provides nourishment and energy to sustain our wellbeing.

Biophilic Principles

Three categories are used to incorporate these elements into interior design: Nature in the Space, Natural Analogues, and Nature of the Space. Let's delve deeper into these categories and explore how you can use them to create a natural biophilic look in your own home.

Nature in the Space

This involves using natural elements in your interior and landscape design. Examples include the use of potted plants, living walls, water features, aquariums, butterfly gardens, bird feeders, and even having pets in your home environment. Other ways to achieve this include using recycled materials made of stone, wood, and natural elements like a fireplace with flames.

Natural Analogues

This category involves the use of nature-inspired elements. These are man-made items that draw inspiration from nature and can recreate a natural look without the maintenance required for real nature in a space. Examples include nature-inspired artworks, high-quality artificial plants, furniture with organic curves, and soft furnishings featuring natural shapes and textures, made from natural fabrics. Thoughtful accent lighting that combines task and mood lighting, along with the use of dimmer switches, can help create a desired mood within a space.

Nature of The Space

This category reproduces elements within the room layout or space. It includes partially obscured views that pique curiosity and draw us closer to investigate, often offering a multi-sensory engagement. Sliding doors opening onto a garden can seamlessly merge the indoor and outdoor environments, allowing fresh air to circulate. Wind chimes add an auditory dimension by replicating the sound of wind, soothing the soul with their restful tones. Air demisters and scents from flowers can make the brain believe it is in a natural environment, even when there is no garden space.

Regardless of your budget, everyone can incorporate Biophilic elements into their home spaces. My top recommendations include potted plants, using wood in art and soft furnishings, opting for curved sofas and chairs with natural fabrics to elevate your mood and stimulate the release of endorphins in the brain. Colors, textures, lighting, flowers, candles, and aromatherapy can awaken your senses of touch, smell, sight, and hearing. The kitchen also plays an important role, with the inclusion of herbs, locally produced products, and the use of skylights within living spaces.

Working spaces

Besides considering natural design ideas for the home, the second place where we spend a significant amount of time is at work. Open plan offices, abundant natural light, plants, water features, and well-planned spaces that extend the comforts of home can create an environment that stimulates the brain and enhances cognitive processes.
